    CCMAS endorsement of vitamin D method—Budapest, Hungary

    At the 39th session of the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) held in Budapest, the vitamin D method I developed was recommended to be adopted as a Codex Type II 'Reference Method' for dispute resolution and calibration purposes.

    Paper accepted for publication entitled "A rapid method for the determination of biotin and folic acid in liquid milk, milk powders, infant formula, and milk-based nutritional products by liquid chromatography‒tandem mass spectrometry" to be published in Journal of AOAC International. This paper describes a rapid method is intended for use in high-throughput laboratories for routine product compliance release testing of biotin and folic acid as part of the manufacture of infant formulas and adult nutritional products.

    SPIFAN meetings at AOAC Mid-Year Meeting—Gaithersburg, MD, USA

    I attended the 17th stakeholder meeting of AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutrition (SPIFAN) and the Expert Review Panel (ERP) to discuss the current developments in methods of analysis for infant formula and reviewing and developing standards for global acceptance. It's always nice to visit the east coast when there's snow on the ground. It's a bit chilly going out but pleasant otherwise. Went to Barnes & Noble booksore and bought some board games for the family.

    AOAC Annual Meeting & Conference—Atlanta, GA, USA

    I attended the 131st AOAC Annual Meeting in Atlanta. At this meeting I received the Method of the Year award and Technical Service of the Year award. Either of these awards are very prestigious and I am honoured to have been awarded both. I attended the 16th stakeholder meeting of AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutrition (SPIFAN) and the Expert Review Panel (ERP) to discuss the current developments in methods of analysis for infant formula and reviewing and developing standards for global acceptance.

    New Zealand Business Innovation Awards—Auckland, New Zealand

    I attended the New Zealand Business Innovation Awards held at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour. Our vitamin D method was a finalist in the Innovation Systems & Performance Improvement category. The evening was fantastic with many of New Zealand's technological innovators in attendance.

    Paper accepted for publication entitled "Analysis of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 in infant and adult nutritional formulas by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry: a multi-laboratory testing study" to be published in Journal of AOAC International. This paper describes the multilaboratory testing study was conducted on AOAC First Action Method 2016.05: Analysis of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 in fortified milk powders, infant formulas, and adult/pediatric nutritional formulas by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

    Paper accepted for publication entitled "The β‑lactoglobulin content of bovine milk: development and application of a biosensor immunoassay" to be published in International Dairy Journal. This paper describes the development and validation of an optical biosensor immunoassay exploiting surface plasmon resonance for the quantification of β‑lactoglobulin in milk.

    I attended the 15th stakeholder meeting of AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutrition (SPIFAN) and the Expert Review Panel (ERP) to discuss the current developments in methods of analysis for infant formula and reviewing and developing standards for global acceptance. Our vitamin D method was endorsed by the Expert Review Panel as an AOAC Official Final Action Method (AOAC 2016.05).

    Visited a laboratory and discussed a range of anayltical issues and had a tour of the facility.
